Bountiful Backyards property tours in Invercargill - Sat 22 Feb
Event description
Join us to tour 3 delightful urban bountiful backyards in Invercargill.
1.) Dave's garden is a quarter acre urban section with very sandy soil where they have lots of established trees and a number of them are natives. They have raised vegetable beds with over 30 different vegetables and a green house. There is also a well established herb garden and 12 different kinds of fruit. Dave is an enthusiastic composter and his garden is surrounded by well maintained mature hedges that provide both shelter and privacy.
2.) Bex is our second host at the Manor House garden, where they as a family are working to restore "The Manor" a 1908 Tudor style home and to create an Urban homesteading garden. They grow organically and aim for their garden to feed their family year round and excess to be sold to recover garden costs or buy what they cannot grow. Visitors can be inspired by how much can be grown on a town section, tips and tricks for seedsaving and propagating your own plants, and garden 'business ' opportunities from your own backyard. Some seeds and plants for sale $2-$5 range.
3.) Michelle invites us to encounter lots of colours and plenty of fragrance from her garden with loads of wild flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruit, accompanied with the cacophony of clucking from the busy hens. A bit rambling with a cottage garden feel, private areas and a large productive hothouse. There will be lavender, sunflower, poppy and sweet pea seeds available, also 50g bags of dried lavender flowers and rhubarb plants.
Lunch is bring a plate to share -> potluck. Preferably something you have made yourself. Or bring your own if that suits you better.
The addresses will be emailed the day before and if you need a ride let the staff at Riverton Environment Centre know.
