Branching Out: Nature Walk and Beginner Photography

We warmly welcome LGBTQIA+, friends and allies in the wider community to join Diversity ACT, Conservation Council and David Cunningham Wildlife for this free nature walk and beginner photography skills.

Guided by ecologist and photographer David Cunningham, you will learn about the native plants and animals in the reserve and also learn easy beginner photography tips to capture wildlife photos that will be so good they'll add followers to your Instagram account!

Join us afterwards at a local cafe for a drink, lunch and/or chat.

Date and Time: Sunday 4 October, 10:00am to 12:00pm

Walk length: up to 5kms

Walk terrain: tracks

Suitable for ages: 16 years plus, all ages with reasonable fitness 

Weather: If it’s raining only lightly or intermittently, we will proceed with a technical presentation in a covered area and a shorter walk.

WHAT TO BRING/WEAR

• Wear long pants, enclosed shoes, and a hat

• Depending on the weather - jacket, beanie

• Sunscreen, water, snacks

• Bring a camera, which can be your mobile phone, a Digital SLR, mirrorless, automatic, or film. Ensure your battery is charged and memory card empty, tripods are not needed.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

This workshop is for beginner photographers with any type of camera from mobile phones and automatic cameras up to DSLR and mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses. Whichever camera or level you are at, David will work with you to increase your knowledge and skills on using the features of your camera to improve your photographs.

Following a brief introduction on how to capturing images for the most impact and information on ethical wildlife photography we will set up our cameras to suit the conditions and our photography experience level. Then we will walk for approximately 5 km around the reserve, stopping to take photos of the wildlife we see with advice from David as we go.

Examples of wildlife photos that David has taken at this location over multiple years are shown over the page, along with the camera settings he used. During the walk, David will answer individual questions about camera settings and techniques.

Bio

David Cunningham is a part-time wildlife photographer and nature guide based in Canberra and has a PhD in ecology. His photos have featured in articles by Lonely Planet and Australian Geographic, and on an Australian postage stamp. He previously worked in various scientific, technical and policy roles with the United Nations and Australian Government.
