With Khary

From funk and soul records to hip-hop, rave, jungle, drum & bass and modern electronic music, a few seconds of drums have shaped decades of music.

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll trace the history of the breakbeat, listen to the original recordings behind some of the most recognizable breaks, and explore how producers have transformed them through looping, chopping, pitching and layering.

Then we’ll bring that history into Ableton Live. You’ll learn how to identify several classic breaks, slice and rearrange them, extract their groove, and combine them with programmed drums to create rhythms that feel alive.

No previous sampling experience required.

Bring: Your laptop with Ableton installed and a pair of headphones.

(Break, 3:00–3:30 pm. Artist Talk follows at 3:30 pm, then Salon, 5:00–7:00 pm, and Open Aux, 7:00–8:00 pm.)
