Brennan Justice Talk #4 2026 Digital Inclusion as the Key to Democracy

Every year Tech + Social Justice Week looks at ways in which tech is aiding or detracting from social justice. This year, Tech and Social Justice Week is focused on how technology affects democracy. Democracy can be interpreted in many ways but at its heart is the participation of citizens in government, law, and policy. For that to occur citizens need to be well informed, have a good understanding of civics, and have the right to education. Digital exclusion is a real issue in Australia today and is a barrier to proper democratic participation and a pressing human rights issue. As part of the UTS Faculty of Law’s Tech + Social Justice Week we are delighted to have Professor Azadeh Dastyari join us to talk about what digital inclusion means.

Professor Azadeh (Az) Dastyari is the Director of the Centre for Western Sydney and a Professor of Human Rights Law at Western Sydney University. She leads place-based research, engagement, and advocacy that seeks to unlock the unlimited potential of Western Sydney, with a strong focus on challenging systemic inequality and amplifying community voices. Professor Dastyari has held visiting scholar appointments at Harvard Law School, Georgetown University, and the European University Institute, and her expertise is regularly sought by parliaments and United Nations bodies.
