Join award-winning contemporary fiction writer Anne Freeman for an immersive exploration of the short story's potential for brilliance. In this ninety-minute workshop, writers will discover how seemingly simple narratives can create extraordinary emotional resonance.

Aspiring and emerging writers will leave with practical skills and techniques, renewed inspiration, and a deeper understanding of the short story's profound potential for creative experimentation and growth.

Learning outcomes

In this workshop, you will learn to:

  • Demonstrate brevity by crafting writing where every word serves a purpose.

  • Construct impactful narratives through concise plotting and rich characterisation.

  • Apply a balanced approach to showing and telling, using each technique purposefully to enhance narrative effect.

  • Develop distinct character voices through dialogue that reflects individual personality and perspective.

  • Edit effectively and critically, removing unnecessary content to improve clarity, tone, and impact.

  • Experiment with form and content by using short stories as a space for creative risk-taking and innovation.

Format

This is an in-person workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be held at State Library of Queensland. This workshop is suitable for aspiring and emerging short fiction writers of all backgrounds.
