Sun, 2 Nov, 10am - 3pm AEDT

Event description

Join us for a day walking through this remarkable landscape. You will be guided by our expert field staff and taken to some of their favorite places. The pace will be gentle, though steep at times and with plenty of time for looking and chatting. You will learn about what makes Brogo special and the work we are undertaking to protect it. So put on your walking shoes, pack a scrumptious lunch and come along for the day.

Located at the north-eastern end of the Bega Valley, Brogo Reserve is one of the largest remaining areas of viable bushland in the area. It spans 120 ha, featuring forest ridges, granite outcrops and fern gullies. More than 70 species of native birds have been recorded on the property since Bush Heritage purchased it in 1995. It is also home to mammals such as sugar gliders, wombats, long-nosed bandicoots, and echidnas.

Please read this guide to prepare for your visit. For enquiries, please email visits@bushheritage.org.au.

Time 10.00 am to 3.00 pm

Meeting Point
Participants will meet staff at the end of Eagles Nest Road next to Brogo Reserve information sign. Google Maps pin - click here or see directions following. From here we will drive in convoy a short distance to a staging area within Brogo Reserve. Staff will aim to be at the meeting point at about 9.30am

Location
Brogo Reserve is located in south-east New South Wales. It is approximately 30 km north of Bega (30min drive), 33km south-west of Cobargo (35min drive), 243km south-east Canberra CBD (3hrs to 4hrs drive) and 420 km south of Sydney CBD (5.5hrs to 6.5hrs drive). Distances and drive times are a guide only, please check for your own travel plans.

Transport
Participants need to arrange their own transport for the day. 2WD vehicles are suitable. Once on site we will set off on foot to undertake a couple of different walks (with a short car shuffle in between).  This will provide you with the best access to the reserve and allow us to showcase different areas of the property.

Fitness/access
You need to have very good mobility, fitness, and health to join this trip. You will likely be on your feet for most of the day, and cover around 5 km. Most of the walking will be off-track on uneven and sometimes rocky ground. Brogo Reserve is a very steep landscape with many large rock outcrops. The walk is designed to encompass the flat land or follow the hillside contours, however at times there will be short sections of ascending moderate to steep slopes. At lunchtime you will need to make use of perching on the ground, a log, or rock.

Food and drink
Participants need to bring lunch, snacks and water for the day. We strongly recommend you carry at least 1.5 L of water for the day to keep you hydrated and happy.

A simple morning tea including hot drinks (byo mugs) will be provided on arrival.

Facilities
There is a composting toilet at the staging area on Brogo Reserve, however after that any toilet breaks will need to be taken in nature. Mobile phone reception can be patchy.

Accommodation
There are no overnight stays on the reserves. Participants will need to make their own accommodation arrangements, with many options available locally in the region.

Pets
Please leave your pets at home.

For the wellbeing of all participants we ask for your assistance by not attending if you are feeling unwell or if you are COVID-positive. Participants are welcome to wear face mask if they choose.
