Brogo Reserve (NSW) Guided Visit - Saturday 19 October 2024

Event description

Located in Yuin Country at the north-eastern end of the Bega Valley, Brogo Reserve is one of the largest remaining areas of viable bushland in the area. It spans 120 ha, featuring forest ridges, granite outcrops and fern gullies. More than 70 species of native birds have been recorded on the property since Bush Heritage purchased it in 1995. It is also home to mammals such as sugar gliders, wombats, long-nosed bandicoots, and echidnas.

Join us for a day walking through this remarkable landscape. You will be guided by our expert field staff and taken to some of their favorite places. The pace will be gentle, though steep at times and with plenty of time for looking and chatting. You will learn about what makes Brogo special and the work we are undertaking to protect it. So pack a scrumptious lunch, put on your walking shoes, and come along for the day.

Date

Time
10.00 am - 3.00 pm
Please arrive by 10.00 am as we will depart after introductions at morning tea. If you arrive late, you may miss the trip as we can’t wait for latecomers.

Location
Brogo Reserve is located in south-east New South Wales. It is approximately 30 km north of Bega, the nearest town, and 409 km south of Sydney.

Meeting Point
Participants will meet at Eagles Nest Road next to the Brogo Reserve information sign.
Google Maps pin - click here. From here we will drive in convoy to a staging area within Brogo Reserve.

Transport
Participants need to arrange their own transport for the day. 2WD vehicles are suitable. Once onsite we will set off on foot to undertake a couple of different walks (with a short car shuffle in between). This will provide you with the best access to the reserve and allow us to showcase different areas of the property.

Fitness/access
You need to have very good mobility, fitness and health to join this trip. You will likely be on your feet for most of the day, and cover around 5 km. Most of the walking will be off-track on uneven and sometimes rocky ground.

Brogo Reserve is a very steep landscape with many large rock outcrops. The walk is designed to encompass the flat land or follow the hillside contours; however, at times there will be short sections of ascending moderate to steep slopes. At lunchtime you will need to make use of perching on the ground, a log, or rock.

Food and drink
Participants need to bring provisions such as lunch, snacks and water for the day. A simple morning tea including hot drinks (BYO mugs) will be provided on arrival at the meeting point.

Facilities
There is a composting toilet at the first stop on Brogo Reserve, however after that, there will be no further access to such facilities. Any toilet breaks will need to be taken in nature.

Mobile phone reception can be patchy.

Accommodation
There are no overnight stays on the reserve. Participants will need to make their own accommodation arrangements, with many options available in the region.

The closest towns are Bega 27 km (approx. 30 min drive), Tathra 42 km (approx. 45 min drive) and Cobargo 32 km (approx. 30 min drive). Additionally, there are options for cabin stays. Rock Lily Cottages and Fernmark Inn Guesthouse on Warrigal Range Road, Brogo, are the closest accommodation options. Yasuragi Cabins, which have a view of the Brogo Reserve, are about 15km (20-minute drive) from the meeting point.

Pets
Please leave your pets at home.

Staying well
For the wellbeing of all participants we ask for your assistance by not attending if you are feeling unwell or if you are COVID-positive. Participants are welcome to wear a facemask if they choose.
