    Bronze Medallion Certificate Training

    The Bronze Medallion course enhances your personal survival skills while providing you with the knowledge and skills to develop the level of judgement, technique and physical ability required to safely carry out water rescues.

    You are required to have a reasonable level of fitness and swimming ability to perform the required aquatic skills.

    You must be at least 14 years old.

    Course Theory
    The course covers a range of water safety topics including safe water practices; survival in the water; self-preservation; recognising an emergency; assessment before and during a rescue; priorities for rescue; resuscitation; acceptance of responsibility; use of bystanders; emergency care; and contacting emergency services. This will be covered on the day of the training. 

    Practical Assessments Include

    • Resuscitation: Demonstrate effective CPR.
    • Swim: Swim 400 metres continuously within 13 minutes (100m freestyle‚ 100m breaststroke, 100m survival backstroke, 100m sidestroke).
    • Timed Tow: Swim 50 metres and tow a patient 50m within 3 min 15 seconds. The candidate will enter the water wearing swimwear, long trousers and a long sleeve shirt, any of which may be discarded as desired.
    • Survival and Rescue Skills: Demonstrate a range of survival techniques and appropriate rescues for a range of different aquatic environments and scenarios.
    • Spinal Injuries: Basic management of a suspected spinal injury in shallow water.
    • Rescue Initiative: Demonstrate initiative in effecting a rescue of two people who are in difficulty up to 15 metres from safety.
    • Contextualized aquatic emergency recognition, aquatic emergency response, aquatic casualty assessment, and communication in an aquatic emergency including injury and incident reporting.

    Candidates are required to bring:

    • Long sleeve shirt and long pants for wearing in the water
    • Photo Identification
    • Pen and paper for note taking
    • Swimwear and towel
    • Goggles and swim cap (if preferred)
    • Comfortable clothing is recommended
