Robotics for Real Impact: Rampey's Journey from Design to Deployment
Event description
Join the Bendigo Tech Community for an exclusive session where Jay will take you under the hood of Rampey, a mobile robot designed to improve accessibility and safety at train stations.
He’ll walk through the robot’s current technology stack, its roadmap toward real-world deployment, and the lessons learned so far.
Beyond the tech, Jay will share insights from building a robotics startup in Bendigo and explore why now is a pivotal moment for engineers and technologists to create real economic and social impact, by solving the challenges most deeply felt by people living with disability.
Who is Jay Davey?
Jay Davey, MSE, BE, is a mechatronics engineer and robotics innovator with expertise in mobile robots, reconfigurable systems, and modular automation. He has led projects across agriculture, warehouse robotics, and accessibility technology. As Lead Mechatronic Design Engineer at Robust AI, Jay pioneered the collaborative autonomous robot Carter, inventing a patented holonomic drivetrain and force-sensitive control system. At Zymergen (now Ginkgo Bioworks), he designed modular Reconfigurable Automation Carts (RACs), earning international recognition with the 2024 International Design Award and Good Design: Medical Award. At Strateos (formerly Transcriptic), he streamlined robotic workflows through mechanical innovation, advancing high-throughput automation. His research includes modular robotics platforms such as SMORES-EP and CK-Bot, blending academic insight with practical engineering. Passionate about building flexible, human-centered robotic systems, Jay continues to push the boundaries of what robots can achieve across industries.
