Build it with Barry - IBC Wicking Bed Setup
Event description
The Build it with Barry sessions
These sessions are designed to be a hands-on experience for people who learn by doing and want to try out new things or see how they are done. The sessions will have limited theory and will be more hands-on where people will participate and learn the techniques and tools to use (or not) for the project through participation.
IBC Wicking Bed setup
This session will be setting up some pre-assembled IBC wicking beds in the glass house and will include positioning the beds, adding the different layers of fill (screenings at the bottom with soil on top). Cladding the beds with second hand tin and adding garden edging to the top. We will also add a homemade worm composting tube to each bed. Finally, we will be planting out some seeds and seedlings for winter harvest.
The wicking beds in the glass house will provide multiple purposes including:
- providing pre and post season produce
- creating a heat sink and source to even out the glass house temperature
- reducing the water usage in what can be a hot and dry environment
Note: the wicking beds used during this session will already be cut and prepared for use. BPG is considering running a workshop on how to make an IBC wicking bed later in the year.
What to bring:
- gardening gloves
- sun gear (hat, sunscreen, long sleeved shirt etc)
- covered shoes
- water bottle
