Building Effective Place-Based Collaborations

Event description

Across the country and for many generations we have seen communities work in collaboration with other decision makers to tackle complex challenges and create stronger communities. More recently, there is a growing interest and emphasis on place-based change as a way of addressing disadvantage and creating more equitable and inclusive systems that work for all. This includes a broad spectrum of orienting programs to place-based contexts through to developing the governance, funding, leadership and ways of working for cross-sector collaboration that centres community leadership in shared decision making.

The purpose of Building Effective Place Based Collaborations is to assist individuals and organisations in identifying place-based approaches that can strengthen their impact, and identify the necessary next steps.

This course is for people working in government, community services, philanthropy, other collaborators and communities who are interested in learning alongside others about:

  • What is place-based change and what is different about it?
  • A working definition of place-based change
  • What leadership and governance look like in an effective place-based change initiative?
  • How to understand and learn about our impact?
  • How to get started or take the next step from our role in the system to enable place-based collaboration?
  • A framework and examples of place-based change
  • Reading and resources
This course is an introductory course for
  • People who are new to working in place-based change.
  • People wanting to train and upskill in place-based ways of working
  • People looking to access skills and tools to help make progress in place
  • People who are policy makers, evaluators, service providers, funders, community changemakers
  • This is also of relevance to consultants, advisors, researchers, of initiatives aligning different types of power to address complex challenges in place or in the systems surrounding place
By the end of the course participants will be able to
  • Understand the approaches and terms used when working with place-based change including community-led change.
  • Understand the defining characteristics and principles of collaborative place-based partnerships.
  • Examine your role and agency as an enabler of impactful place-based partnerships.
