Building Queensland’s Inaugural Hail Sensor Network
Description
UQ HailNet aims to establish a long-term, scientifically robust hail monitoring system across South-East Queensland and the Darling Downs. This webinar will provide an educational platform for farmers, industry, extension staff, weather risk researchers to learn about the impacts of hail and convective storms experienced in urban and regional areas.
Hailstorms regularly cause loss and damage to buildings, infrastructure, crops and communities throughout Queensland. Buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure are vulnerable to damage from large hail. Regional locations and agricultural crops especially can be vulnerable to damage from intense storms producing small sized hailstones.
Learn about building Queensland’s first automated network of hail and wind monitoring stations to better understand and manage the impact of severe weather on communities, infrastructure, and agriculture.
This collaboration between The University of Queensland (UQ), the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), and the Queensland Farmers Federation (QFF) is funded through the Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Fund (QRRRF) administered by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA).
Lineup

Dr Jonathan Barratt
Dr Jonathan Barratt holds a PhD in Applied Climate Sciences, is a Research Fellow at the University of Southern Queensland, and is a Fellow of both the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance & Finance and the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment. He is also the CEO of CelsiusPro Australia, a company specialising in parametric insurance solutions and software designed to actively price, manage, and settle climate and natural disaster risk transfer products.

Dr Joshua Soderholm
Dr Joshua Soderholm is a senior scientist at the Bureau of Meteorology where he focuses on short-term thunderstorm prediction and weather radar. He has a PhD in Science (Meteorology) and is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland.

Dr Matthew Mason
Dr Matthew Mason is an Associate Professor in the School of Civil Engineering at The University of Queensland. His research expertise lies in the field of natural hazard engineering, where he has interests in a range of topics, including; catastrophe risk modelling (tropical cyclones, thunderstorms, floods), wind engineering, wind tunnel testing, boundary layer meteorology and observational meteorology. Dr Mason also has a strong interest in understanding and mitigating the impact of severe weather on the built environment through the application of advanced risk modelling and assessment tools.
