/ BUNGARRIBEE /

Bungarribee is led by highly respected pianist, accordionist and composer, Gary Daley and features several of Australia’s pre‑eminent contemporary musicians. Each has made significant contributions to jazz, classical and world music. As a child, Daley travelled down Bungarribee Road in Sydney’s outer western suburbs to his earliest music lessons which subsequently led to a lifelong journey of musical discovery.

Bungarribee embarks on a creative journey that unfolds via deep communication and improvisation. Performing original compositions along with fresh improvisations on music by iconic composers such as Bartok, Ligeti, and Bach filtered through diverse traditions such as jazz, folk and classical. Freedom and connection between musicians and the audience are central to a Bungarribee performance. For this musical adventure, Gary Daley will be joined by long-time artistic partners, Paul Cutlan and Ollie Miller, along with one of Australia’s most remarkable young musicians, drummer Chloe Kim.

/ GARY DALEY; Piano, Accordion & Electronics /

Gary Daley is best known as a musician playing in some of the elite bands of Australian jazz, such as The Catholics. He leads the quartet Bungarribee which features his compositions and interpretations from the classical repertoire. Gary is a composer and educator and plays piano and piano accordion. He has toured nationally and internationally and has received two Australia Council grants for new work and recording. His projects have appeared at notable venues and festivals nationwide, garnering excellent reviews. Another side to Gary is his appearances on the ABC TV children’s channel in one of Australia’s most loved preschool shows ‘Lah Lah’s Adventures’ and ‘The Stripy Sock Club’.

/ PAUL CUTLAN; Reeds /

Many styles, including contemporary classical music, world music and jazz inform Paul’s uniquely expressive voice as a multi-instrumentalist and composer. Paul is a long-standing member of the Australian Art Orchestra and ARIA-winning world-music group MARA!

/ OLLIE MILLER; Cello & Electronics /

/ CHLOE KIM; Percussion /

Seoul-born Chloe Kim is an improvising drummer at the forefront of a new wave of creative jazz music in Sydney. Chloe performs in her own exciting style, a combination of her jazz, rock and Korean heritage, informed through her studies with Simon Barker, and can be heard on her two solo albums and a range of collaborations including her co-led group Holopeak and their debut album Summit Over. Chloe was recently a featured soloist in the Sydney Festival production of Disruption! The Voice of Drums, with Jeremy Rose and the Earshift Orchestra.

“The music, equally, is located somewhere to the north-east of jazz but definitely south-south-west of European art music. The quartet grew out of Daley’s larger ‘Sanctuary’ project, yet retains that ensemble’s unique breadth of vision, and intricate interweaving of composed and improv elements.”

– Excerpt from John Hardaker review.

“It’s a rare sensation these days, but there is still such exhilaration in being taken to the edge of the possible. Many sections of this concert made you felt you’d had a craniotomy, and the top of your skull had rocketed skyward.”

– Excerpt from John Shand review.

“Each member of the band oozes experience, which triggers confidence in the listener to something new and unforgettable… some magic happens on the stage and it’s hard to put a finger on it. What an intelligent approach to music! ”

– Zoli Mauritz, Music by the sea festival, Brisbane 2018.

/ UNDERWARDS /

The full moon through trees and mist. Towering majestic cliffs above a quiet rural valley. A calm river winding through a rocky landscape. A swim in a tidal ocean pool. A muddy swamp teeming with life. The effects that being in nature has upon our senses, our minds, and the stories and memories that places hold. This is what Underwards makes music about.

Underwards features some of Sydney’s most exciting, versatile and creative musicians, led by award-winning trumpeter and composer Ellen Kirkwood. Their music, like nature, combines beauty, mystery, colour and rhythm but also leans into how humans experience nature; sometimes with joy or calm, other times melancholy or bewilderment, even awe.

This performance will be part of Underwards’ launch tour for Delve; their characterful and eclectic debut album. Delve boasts ten original, contrasting and evocative tracks, in which Kirkwood and her talented bandmates show off their abundance of musical versatility, wit and expressivity.
