About me:

Did you know that no two Corroboree Frogs have exactly the same markings? Just like tiger stripes and fingerprints, every single one is unique. Arguably Australia’s most iconic amphibian, the Corroboree Frog is tiny, adorable, and not to be underestimated - as it’s also extremely poisonous.

Once common in forests, heathland and small creeks in the alpine zone, this species is now critically endangered. In the ACT, it is estimated that there are less than a hundred Northern Corroboree Frogs remaining.

The Northern Corroboree Frog is integral to songlines, dreaming stories, and traditional ecological knowledge for First Peoples. ‘Gyack’, is a totem for the Walgalu People of the Upper Murrumbidgee River catchment. Its breeding call heralds preparation for Walgalu people to travel to the Australian high country for spring seasonal ceremonies and sacred business.

Threats:

The biggest threat to The Northern Corroboree Frog is disease caused by the introduced Amphibian Chytrid Fungus, which has caused extinctions of other frog species worldwide. Other threats include climate change, drought, bushfire, disturbances from introduced hoofed animals, and weed-invasion.
