Bush Playgroup

Explore, discover and play in nature with Eco Explorers! 🌿

Our Bush Playgroup is a wonderful opportunity for young children and their caregivers to slow down, get outdoors and discover the natural world together.

Facilitated by Eco Explorers, each session invites children to learn through nature-based play, hands-on exploration and imagination. From spotting bugs and collecting natural treasures to getting muddy, making nature-inspired creations and listening to stories, children are encouraged to follow their curiosity and explore at their own pace.

The program provides a relaxed and welcoming environment where children can build confidence, develop social skills and strengthen their connection with nature — while caregivers have the opportunity to connect with other local families.

What to Expect

🌿 Explore nature — Discover plants, animals, insects and seasonal changes through guided walks and outdoor exploration.

🐛 Get curious — Go on bug hunts, scavenger hunts and other nature-based adventures.

💧 Sensory play — Get hands-on with mud, water, leaves, sticks and other natural materials.

🎨 Create and imagine — Enjoy nature-inspired crafts, storytelling, songs and imaginative play.

🌱 Follow their lead — Plenty of time for child-led, unstructured play and discovery.

🤝 Connect and belong — A friendly space for children and caregivers to meet, play and build connections within the community.

What to Bring

Come prepared for outdoor adventure! We recommend bringing:

Weather-appropriate clothing, including a hat and raincoat
Sturdy shoes or gumboots
A water bottle and snacks
A change of clothes and a towel — getting muddy is part of the fun!

Who's It For?

Children aged 0–5 and their parents, grandparents or caregivers.

No previous experience is needed — just bring your little explorer and a sense of curiosity!

Our Story

The Craig Family Centre has been a treasured meeting place and children's centre for over 60 years in the Ashburton community.

The Craig Family Centre started its life as a result of a £2,000 bequest from the niece of WEJ Craig, an early Camberwell businessman. Money was donated to the Camberwell City Council to build a Children's Centre as a memorial to her uncle in the part of Ashburton known then as Alamein.

Alamein was built from 1948 by the Victorian government to provide housing for low income families after the Second World War. Many returned servicemen settled in the area in streets named after battles they had fought, planes they had fought in and significant events of the war. The main thoroughfare was named Victory Boulevard.

Most families consisted of working men, with women who were homemakers. Young mothers wanted a community space where they and their children could meet to share experiences. They worked hard to establish 'The Craig', which evolved over the years.

The original building grew bit by bit with various sections added as funding became available. A Neighbourhood House, community health centre (now Access Health & Community) and Maternal and Child Health Service was added to create a Community Hub known as the Craig Family Centre.

In the tradition of the original families, after many years of lobbying, including a petition signed by over 1,200 local residents, the Boroondara City Council approved a four-year-old kindergarten at the Craig, and to the delight of local families the original childcare centre was demolished and works began on our new Children's Hub! In 2015 our newest development was opened and in 2016 our four-year-old kindergarten program took its first enrolments.

The Craig Family Centre looks forward to continuing to grow with the Ashburton community and upholding our strong tradition of providing welcoming, relevant quality services to local residents.
