Business Bootcamp: Finance, People & Structure

Working alongside business owners every day, we are acutely aware of two pain points facing them right now - finance and people. We strongly believe that getting an external expert perspective on both will give you much-needed confidence, clarity and support. 

This 1-day workshop has been designed to provide exactly this – to give SME business owners the tools and frameworks to confidently manage and adapt to the current business environment through both a financial and people lens.

Session 1: 9:00 am to 12:30 pm: Finance & Accounting

Facilitator: Steven Rae - Director, Vazey Child

This ½-day session has been designed to lift your confidence and your understanding of the financials in your business. It will be focused on integrated forecasting, financing options and reporting.  It will be interactive, hands-on and practical with the focus very much on navigating these tough economic challenges from a finance and accounting perspective.

The workshop will highlight, reinforce, and provide expert advice on:

• Understanding your current and future cash requirements via integrated forecasting and scenario (sensitivity) analysis.
• Planning, and contingency planning, around financing options including bank funding (in all its forms: overdraft, term loan, debtor financing, inventory financing); external investment; own investment (e.g. selling down assets and investing the capital back into your business); supplier support; etc.  Creativity is the key here.
• Managing key relationships to help manage cash flow - your bank, investors, accountant, suppliers.
• Getting intimate with your Balance Sheet, what are the key watchouts that you should be across.
• Reporting: key liquidity metrics and forward indicators (operational KPIs) that you will live and die by.
• Restructuring: what a robust restructure looks like, not simply a cost-out exercise, but rather a review of supply chain management, distribution channels, underlying business structure and operations.

This has always been important but never more than now.

Session 2: 1:15 pm to 4:45 pm: Proactive Organisational Design & Restructuring

Facilitator: Sylvie Thrush Marsh – Chief Evangelist, MyHR New Zealand

This ½-day session will provide you with the tools to look at your organisational design and people resourcing, and assess if there is a case to be made for making changes. Implementing structural change, or restructuring, is the next step in the process to get the right roles set up in the right way, so the business runs more efficiently, or delivers its products or services more effectively.

The workshop will highlight, reinforce, and provide perspective on:

• Organisational design - right people, right place, right time.
• Signs that your organisational design is working well…or not so well.
• Building a case for restructuring – commercials, consultation, and communication.
• Understanding the consequences, and minimising the risks, of restructuring poorly.
• General principles for restructuring, avoiding a “one-size-fits-all” approach.
• Common mistakes, and how to avoid them.
• Survivor management – engaging those who remain.

There is some flexibility in terms of the scale and detail of each restructure, but there are some crucial steps and principles that can’t be legally ignored.  It’s much easier to avoid problems and make the necessary changes smoothly if you fully understand the process, and everyone’s part in it, before you embark on it.
