Event description

The Journey of Afterpay - With Jonathan Shapiro & Jemima Whyte

Jonathan is the co-author of 'Buy Now, Pay Later: The extraordinary story of Afterpay'.  He and Jemima will explore the rise of Afterpay and what it has taught Jonathan about entrepreneurship, family, community, markets, investing, politics and business.

Jonathan Shapiro is a Senior reporter for the Financial Review. His focus is banking and finance, specialising in hedge funds, corporate debt, private equity and investment banking. Jonathan is based in Sydney and recently co-authored the novel, 'Buy Now, Pay Later: The Story of Afterpay', together with his colleague James Eyers.

With amazing luck, the book was released in the same week as Afterpay announced it’s A$39 billion takeover by digital payments company Square. Once completed, the transaction will be the biggest takeover deal in Australian corporate history. 'Buy Now, Pay Later: The Story of Afterpay sold out in one day and book stores are struggling to keep up with demand.

Jemima Whyte is a senior reporter for the Financial Review. Her focus is business and markets. Jemima is based in Sydney.

"Like it or not, Afterpay has, in a remarkably short period, become an important participant in consumer finance markets in Australia and the world. This book explores in detail how this occurred and who made it happen. It is well written and well worth reading." - David Gonski AC, company director
