What does it take to recover some of Australia’s most threatened mallee birds?

Join us for the Second Nature Conservancy AGM, followed by a fascinating presentation from Craig Gillespie, Senior Ecologist, Landscape Ecology Team with Landscape SA, Murraylands and Riverland about the Call of the Mallee project.

The scale of this conservation work is enormous. Across the mallee woodlands north of the Riverland, a network of conservation partners is working across more than 850,000 hectares of land - an area roughly twice the size of Kangaroo Island - to restore and protect one of South Australia’s most important remaining mallee landscapes.

At the heart of this work is the Mallee Bird Community, a threatened ecological community made up of 20 bird species that depend on healthy mallee habitat. Ten of these species are threatened in South Australia, and six are threatened nationally, including the iconic Malleefowl and Mallee Emu-wren.

Craig will share the story behind the Call of the Mallee project and the practical work underway to restore this vast landscape - restoring natural hydrology, managing feral animal pressure and monitoring target bird species.

Expect fascinating birds, big landscapes and some thought-provoking examples of what it takes to tackle conservation at scale.

The evening will begin with a very brief Second Nature Conservancy AGM, followed by Craig’s presentation.
