Event description

Sanitation in water-scarce environments is a major challenge in rural Cambodia, where water scarcity, exacerbated by climate change, seasonal droughts, and poor infrastructure, limits access to clean water and functional sanitation systems. Traditional pour-flush latrines, which require a reliable water supply, are often impractical in these areas, leading to unsanitary conditions and health risks. Engineers Without Borders Australia (EWB) is addressing this by designing water-efficient sanitation solutions tailored to the needs of water-scarce communities, aligning with Cambodia’s goal of achieving 100% rural sanitation coverage by 2025.

The Water Scarce Sanitation Solution Project aims to develop and pilot locally produced, sustainable toilet systems that reduce water usage and are resilient to climate change. Through a co-design process with communities, the project focuses on creating culturally appropriate sanitation technologies that provide safe, affordable, and sustainable solutions for rural households facing water scarcity, while also promoting water conservation and improving public health.

This event is open to all engineering or related professionals across all disciplines. We encourage existing and new members of our EWB community who are interested in getting involved or volunteering with EWB in a professional capacity, to attend. This is a free event that will be held on the evening of Wednesday 26th February at the Engineers Australia office in Adelaide CBD (108 King William Street, Level 11).
