Event description

We invite you to join us for an evening of music, and conversation with friends of the gallery and Robbie Thorpe. Come and gather around the fire, and connect with the enduring spirit of Camp Sovereignty - a movement rooted in resistance, cultural continuity, and sovereignty.

Established in 2006, Camp Sovereignty began with the lighting of a ceremonial fire at the Kings Domain Resting Place - a sacred burial ground for repatriated remains of Aboriginal people. Coinciding with the 2006 Commonwealth Games (renamed the “Stolenwealth Games” by protestors), the camp was both a political act and a cultural assertion, foregrounding the ongoing struggle for Indigenous rights and recognition.

Now re-established for another 483 days, Camp Sovereignty continues as a powerful grassroots project committed to asserting sovereignty and truth-telling. This information night offers a space to reflect on its legacy, explore current developments, and learn how to support and engage with the work.

This is an opportunity to listen, learn, and connect - through dialogue, and good old fashioned hospitality. All are welcome. Dinner is on us!

“It serves as a living memorial, not only acknowledging the past but
ensuring future generations remember and understand the historical
injustices faced by Indigenous peoples.

If indigenous culture is only preserved as archeological remains and not
given frameworks to stay alive and thrive by staying
maintained,
evolving and relevant to current and emerging generations, then it
threatens to die out.”

- Uncle Robbie Thorpe, 2025
