Event description

“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win”-Mahatma Gandhi

Who is this online skill-up for?

This online skill-up is for anyone and everyone who is passionate about creating change in their community. You might have been dreaming of getting your city council to invest in better public transport, start a big community recycling project, have solar panels on your local library or stop a new mega dairy farm from opening in your area. Whatever you have identified to be your communities challenge, this online skill-up will make you feel ready to turn your dream into a campaign.

The world of “online training/courses” is dominated by boring lectures, one-way questionnaires, and drawing out the worst of traditional education.  We don’t want to replicate that model. With this online skill-up we attempt to connect our content with something from your past experience to honour what you are bringing, encourage self-awareness, and provoke a questioning of our material. Learning from each other and sharing ideas will be a part of this.

This skill-up is designed to build on your existing knowledge inviting you to share in groups at different times. Please make you sure you have access to a computer to join zoom and unmute yourself in break-out sessions.

Key takeaways from the skill-up?

  • How to build a Campaign
  • Setting goals + targets
  • Exploring tactics
  • Campaign Strategy 101
  • Engage your officials

Our presenters and guest speakers:

Kelly Albion (They/Them)

Kelly Albion has been a climate activist since they were in high school and joined 350 Australia in November 2019 with a fire in their belly to take on the fossil fuel lobby. Kelly manages the Fossil Free campaigns team and supports the Organising Team to inspire hundreds of new activists. Previously they were building a generation-wide movement to solve the climate crisis at the Australian Youth Climate Coalition in various roles including campaigns, communications, schools program coordination and supporting the work of Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network. Kelly enjoys dancing, hiking and taking on the bad guys.

Adam Currie (He/Him)

Adam Currie is a rangatahi climate justice activist who was spurred to action by a freak storm that sent waves crashing into his community in Whakatū Nelson. Adam studied politics as his undergrad and recently graduated with a MA in Peace and Conflict Studies. During his studies, he has been involved in a number of climate organisations including being the co-convenor for Generation Zero Dunedin, and Zero Carbon Act convenor for Dunedin, as well as part of other environmental groups around Dunedin. Since 2022 Adam is one of the agriculture and climate communications specialists at Greenpeace Aotearoa.

Eliot Pryor (He/Him)

Eliot Pryor is a Pākehā former Wellingtonian now based in Tāmaki Makaurau. As Digital Engagement Specialist at Greenpeace Aotearoa he is finding ways to mobilise supporters to take action for the planet. Previously he held roles with ActionStation, SAFE and Amnesty International. His inspiration is seeing everyday people and communities using both digital tools and relational organising to recognise their own power for leading change.

Alva Feldmeier (She/Her)

Alva Feldmeier is a climate justice and human rights activist from Germany. In her high school years, she started to train her campaigning skills by campaigning to double the refugee quota. In 2018 she joined Oil Free Otago and 350 Ōtepoti as a volunteer campaigner to stop further oil and gas explorations in the Great South Basin and call on NZ's banks to stop investing in fossil fuels. Alva is now the Executive Director of 350 Aotearoa and serves on the Board of Amnesty International.
