Campaigns Against Racism & the Music They Inspired [PUBLIC TALK]
Event description
Accompanying every fight against racism, from slave revolts, the struggle for civil rights and later, Rock Against Racism, to now the movement for justice for refugees, has been the music these campaigns have inspired.
Music that has exposed the racism that has underpinned the stoking of fear and division, and music that celebrates the struggles and collective strength of the movements.
Join us for a journey through these campaigns - hear the stories, the music and the images that have become part of the cultural DNA of the history of campaigns against racism.
Dr John Minns will be presenting the talk - watch the video below for more details:
Topics will include:
- Anti-slavery fights of the 19th century through to the Black Lives Matter movement and Indigenous rights struggles in Australia
- What makes these movements tick?
- What we can learn from them?
- What MUSIC did they inspire and how did they use MUSIC in their campaigns?
Local community samba band RAIO DE SOL will be performing street percussion music directly after the event (outside at ANU).
This event is organised by the Refugee Action Campaign (Canberra)
