Campfire - Saturday 1 February 2024
Event description
Gather round the Campfire. Bring a friend or come and meet a new one.
Join us for a big hearted evening of sharing songs, story, music and more.
A Campfire is like a family concert. A performance created by artists and audiences to celebrate, share knowledge and create lasting community connections.
It was around the campfire that we first marked significant events. We told stories, danced, drew pictures in the sand, and sang about the things we needed to understand. We created rituals to help us build knowledge and share wisdom. And by doing so, we thrived as a community.
Each Campfire is built from the contributions of the people who turn up. You can be a generous audience or you can bring something along to share.
When:Â Saturday 7th December 2024
Time:Â Â 7pm for a 7:15pm start.
Where: Midnightsky Studio 2. 101 Victoria Street in Fitzroy (very close to the corner of Brunswick street and Johnston Street. Not Victoria Parade)
How much do I pay for my ticket?
Tickets scale from $5 - $500 (!)Â Campfire is funded entirely from your generosity and lots of hours of volunteer time! Below is a guide for deciding how much to pay for your ticket.Â
$5 - This ticket is for those in financial difficulty. If more than a handful of people buy this ticket then we wouldn't be able to keep running Campfire. But we also don't want to stop anyone who wants to come from coming along.Â
$15/$20Â - These tickets are our 'concession' price. You know, for students and the unemployed or the under-employed. If about 1/4 of people buy these tickets we can keep the Campfire burning.
$30/$40/$50 - These tickets are our 'full' price. For everyday people who have a stable income, a roof over their heads and the ability to do things like buy a coffee without thinking too much about it. If 3/4 of people buy these tickets we can all breathe easy knowing the Campfire will be there again next month.
$100/$250/$500 - These tickets are a gift to the Campfire project. They are a vote of confidence in the power of the performing arts to grow and sustain thriving communities. Every time someone buys one of these tickets I cry (yes, actually cry), humbled by the passionate support for Campfire.Â
Timing
7pm – Boat folding, gather for the show, finishing touches to the space.Â
7:15pm – We are getting ready to roll.
7:25pm - Doors close.
7:30pm – We begin (on the dot).
10pm – Official finish.
Food/Drinks - Eat before you come, BYO everything except alcohol (we are now an alcohol free event). BYO shared food if you like. Read more at the Campfire FAQ’s
Performing - Your first and most important job is to come along and enjoy the evening. Being a generous audience is all that you need do. If you’d like to share something I’d recommend having a read of our Campfire FAQ’s for more details on how it all works. In short, it’s very supportive and we encourage you to share things that will be nurturing for yourself and the audience.
Cancellation policy - Tickets are non refundable and non transferable. Having said that, if you can’t make it we do really appreciate you letting us know as we may be able to find someone to join us (there is often a waiting list). If you are feeling unwell at the last minute we strongly encourage you to stay home (for obvious reasons) and may use our discretion to transfer your tickets to the next months Campfire. We only offer to do this transfer once. Otherwise it can become a bit of an administrative nightmare! In essence, when you book your ticket we are really excited about you and your friends being there, we’re counting on seeing you! Its a smallish space and every seat counts.
Documentation - Campfire performances are documented for archive purposes (video and audio). There is no intended public use of this documentation. They would be used as the foundation for learning about Campfire so that we can teach others to run a Campfire and possibly writing a book about it. If any of the documentation is to be used (other than for internal review) in a public way (for group training or anything else) then we will do our absolute best to contact you and get your permission first.
Unfortunately this content is not available for you to access. The time it would take to do so is too onerous and if people were coming along to get a document of their performance...well it changes things, we may be able to make this work one day...but at this stage it is too much for us to manage!
Occasionally the event is filmed/photographed to create imagery for promoting the event. You will be informed of this on the night and have the option to not appear in the promotional images.
Why Campfire now?Â
We feel like the balance between the health risks and the community/health benefits are now tipping in favour of gathering in this way (rather than not). Read some more about our thoughts here…Â
In a nut shell…we will vent the space half way through the event (because ventilation is magic), get your vaccinations up to date, wash your hands, don’t attend events if you are feeling unwell and if it helps you feel comfortable wear a mask. Hope that helps!
