Event description

About the event

India is on track to be the world’s third-largest economy by 2030. In Australia, many look to India as a potential cornerstone of a more balanced security order and a driver of economic diversification. Cooperation between the two countries has expanded in scope and structure through the Quad and related initiatives as well as through growing trade integration.

While expectations around India’s strategic and economic heft are great, questions loom large around the country’s political challenges and its capacity for reform. Where does optimism about India’s rise collide with political‑economy realities? What role does India seek in the international system today?

On Thursday 5 September, join the Canberra Security Economics Network and Professor Ian Hall (Griffith University), author of Modi and the Reinvention of Indian Foreign Policy, to discuss the political economy dimensions of India’s rise and the implications for Australia.
