CARE in Action Launch: Everyone Has a Role to Play
Description
Join us for the launch of CARE in Action and explore how communities across rural and regional Victoria are taking action to prevent gender-based violence. Plus, hear from guest speaker and former AFL footballer Mitch Brown about the role we can all play in creating safer, more respectful and inclusive communities.
Drawing on his experiences both on and off the field, Mitch will share insights into leadership, vulnerability, resilience, and creating cultures of respect and belonging. As a leading advocate for positive masculinity and inclusion, he brings a unique perspective on challenging harmful gender stereotypes, fostering wellbeing, and creating environments where people feel safe to be themselves.
As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, this special event celebrates the launch of CARE in Action, a new resource showcasing the people, partnerships and initiatives helping create safer, more respectful communities across rural and regional Victoria. Through practical examples from workplaces, sporting clubs, community groups and local governments, CARE in Action demonstrates that preventing violence is everyone's responsibility and highlights the many ways individuals and organisations can contribute to lasting change.
Whether you're already involved in gender equality and prevention work or looking for inspiration on where to start, this event offers a unique opportunity to learn from others, celebrate local leadership, strengthen connections and leave with renewed energy for creating change in your community.

About Mitch Brown
Mitch Brown is a former AFL footballer who played 94 games for the West Coast Eagles between 2007 and 2016. In 2025, he made history as the first AFL player, past or present, to publicly come out bisexual, sparking important conversations about inclusion, visibility, and the culture of men’s sport in Australia.
Since retiring, Mitch has focused on social impact work, including in First Nations affairs. He now works full time as an advocate for LGBTQIA+ inclusion, gender equity and positive masculinities, with a focus on wellbeing and creating spaces where men feel safe to express vulnerability and authenticity.
A proud father to three young sons, Mitch draws on his own experiences, both on and off the field, inspire others to lead with empathy, courage, and integrity. Through his story, he demonstrates that strength comes in many forms and that visibility and acceptance can transform lives, teams, and communities.
Mitch speaks widely on leadership, resilience, wellbeing, and the importance of being true to oneself, offering audiences a rare combination of personal insight, professional experience, and heartfelt advocacy for a more inclusive and respectful society.
In 2026, Respect Victoria and Safe and Equal are working together to support local community engagement with the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Women’s Health Loddon Mallee has been funded under Respect Victoria’s 16 Days of Activism grassroots initiative.
