Event description

We are thrilled to continue our event series, Career Curiosity Series. This series will offer our Year 10-12 students valuable insights into tertiary education and various career paths from members of St Mark's community who share their post-school experiences. Based on student feedback to our Futures Team, each session will highlight a different sector.

This Career Curiosity event will focus on the Cyber Security / IT Services / Software Engineering Sector, featuring speakers from these fields. Students interested in careers in these fields won’t want to miss this opportunity. Even if you’re undecided about your future career, come along to explore and understand what working in these sectors could be like!

RSVPs are essential as a light continental breakfast will be provided.

DATE: Wednesday 26 March 2025

TIME: 7:30am - 8:35am

VENUE: SAC Staffroom

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A STUDENT ONLY EVENT.

SPEAKERS:

  • Meet Cyber Threat Exposure Analyst JACQUELINE JONES:
Since graduating, Jacqueline has worked in various tech positions both domestically and abroad. Her current position as a cyber threat exposure management analyst within a law enforcement agency focuses on proactive monitoring, assessment, and reporting of her agency's external attack surface. Jacqueline has a graduate certificate in cyber security, a graduate certificate in computing, information technology qualifications obtained from TAFE, and industry certifications. She is currently finishing her final subject at Charles Sturt University, where she will earn her Master of Cyber Security.

  • Meet Senior Engineering Manager JACOB LUCAS (Class of 1998):
Jacob has been in the Software Engineering industry since graduating from UWA with a Bachelor's in Computer Science in 2003. He's worked in various-sized tech companies across Australia, Singapore, and the USA over the last 20+ years. Jacob started his career as a Software Engineer, but about 7 years ago, he pivoted into a Management/Leadership role. He is excited to return to St Mark's and share more of his career journey with the students!

  • Meet Cyber Security Analyst BLAIR JOHNSTON (Class of 2020)

Blair graduated from St Mark's in 2020 as an ATAR student. He had always known he wanted to pursue a university degree in computer science or a related field but was unsure of the specifics. However, after the school organised an excursion to Edith Cowan University (ECU), his interest in cyber security became clear. Participating in the PeCan CTF (Capture The Flag) competition at SMACS further reinforced this interest. Blair then enrolled in a full-time Bachelor of Science (Cyber Security) program. During his time at the university, he engaged in volunteer work within the academic and industry communities. In his third year, he secured a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement, essentially an internship program, at a Security Operations Centre (SOC). Upon completing the placement and finishing his degree, he was offered a job by the same SOC that hosted his WIL program. He has been working there for over a year now

We are planning to schedule further Career Curiosity Series events. If there is a particular sector you are interested in and would like included in the Career Curiosity Series or would like to chat with an Old Scholar in that field, please contact Mrs Pearce, Head of Futures, epearce@stmarks.wa.edu.au
