Scrub Up Your Scrub: Caring for Native Vegetation
Description
Are you a landholder with native vegetation on your property?
Join us for a guided walk and talk through Yantaringa Nature Reserve, Hahndorf, a site with a fascinating and varied history, and discover practical ways to care for and improve native vegetation on your property.
As we explore the reserve, we'll uncover the stories that have shaped the landscape, from rubbish dumping and mining to fire, vehicle access, bike tracks and recreation. These impacts provide a unique opportunity to see examples of both healthy and degraded native vegetation and discuss what influences vegetation condition beyond the more commonly recognised impacts of livestock grazing.
Along the way, we'll explore:
The Five Steps to Thriving Native Vegetation guide
Different native vegetation communities and species
Identifying signs of vegetation in good, moderate and poor condition
Managing weed infestations, from scattered weeds in healthy vegetation to dense infestations
Practical approaches to managing herbivory impacts from rabbits, kangaroos and stock
What to do when native animals rely on patches of non-native vegetation
Developing realistic and achievable actions for your property.
Historical photos and posters will be used throughout the walk to showcase how the reserve has changed over time and help connect landscape history to current vegetation management challenges.
Participants will leave with:
A native vegetation community and species list for their property
A practical guide to caring for native vegetation
A personalised action plan and map of their property to support future management decisions
