Carpentry for Beginners

This workshop is one of the next steps after completing either our Introduction to Woodwork class or the Introduction to the Wood Workshop series. Alongside our Cabinetry for Beginners, it’s one of the pathways we offer to continue building your practical skills and confidence.

Carpentry focuses on the practical building skills used in and around the home. This hands-on workshop will introduce you to essential carpentry tools and techniques, enabling you to tackle common projects and repairs yourself.

You’ll construct a mock-up stud wall frame so you understand how to tackle basic repairs and modifications.  You’ll also learn how to cut and install timber mouldings and securely hang pictures and shelves…level!

To finish, you'll build a planter box to take home while putting your new skills into practice. Depending on the group's experience and progress, we'll also cover fitting common door hardware such as hinges and handles.

There’s plenty of opportunity throughout the workshop to ask questions about your own projects and share your experiences with your fellow workshoppers.

Learning includes:

  • measuring, squaring, cutting and joining techniques

  • working with plasterboard (GIB)

  • how to safely and securely hang pictures and shelves

  • different types of mouldings and practice installing

  • cutting and working with angles

Materials

We aim to use as many recycled materials as possible, however, some items are difficult or costly for us to source, so we add a small materials charge to contribute towards these.
