Acrobalance Workshop & Jam in Castlemaine
Event description
Warm up in July with a fun and energetic day of acro with a group of excellent people in Castlemaine!
Plan for the day
10am - 1pm Acro Workshop
We'll start with a thorough warm up (as it might be chilly!) and activities to calibrate your acro skills and get you working with different people. We'll then move into a series of skills and transitions that can be put together into an interesting L-base flow sequence. It's a 3hr workshop - but we'll have a short tea break in the middle :)
1pm - 2pm Lunch break
2pm - 4pm Acro Jam
The circus space will be open to class participants for jamming, and practicing what you learnt in the morning. The trainers (Em and Sim) will be around to help with any troubleshooting.
Feedback from previous workshop attendees
"What a delightful way to spend a weekend - exploring new acro sequences with a bunch of friendly people who were all there to play and learn. Sim and Em were the perfect guides, demonstrating and troubleshooting with care for each other and the group. I’d love to do it again!"
"This is an inclusive, welcoming, talented, and generous team who have thoughtfully created a great workshop for all levels and flyer/basing preferences. The warm ups were a particular highlight- fun, playful, silly, sweaty, and effectively prepared my body for the beautiful shapes and transitions we created in the L Basing."
Acro style
The workshop will focus predominantly on L-base acro flow and transitions, with maybe a sneaky pop or two!
During the jam you are welcome to practice what you learn in class - or play with other skills & tricks you're familiar with.
Prerequisites
Ideally you will have done some partner acro in the past and are familiar with basic L-base shapes (e.g. bird, star and inversions) with enough stability so you're ready to learn how to move from one position to another. Please reach out if you have questions about the suitability of this workshop
Trainers
Simone Sheridan & Emily Ross
Sim & Em have a fun, inclusive teaching style. They both love L-base acro and have taught together for many years at Women*s Circus and at festivals including APAC and Spin Circus Festival. Their extensive teaching experience means they have a bag full of tricks, techniques, drills and hacks to help unlock skill development and create a fun and supportive learning environment for all participants.
Location
Castlemaine Circus, 35 Etty St Castlemaine (Old high school campus)
It's an excellent place to do acro - matted floor, crash mats, etc. It's likely to be chilly in winter though so bring layers you can take on and off easily.
Q&A
Do I need to come as a pair?
Absolutely not! This day will be about working with different people in small groups to build your skills. If you have a training partner and want to come as a pair - you're very welcome...and it's nice if you're up for working with other people as well - but we can make sure you get dedicated training time together too.
I'm coming from out of town - what else is good for me to know?
It's easy to catch the train to Castlemaine from Bendigo or Southern Cross Station (Melbourne) or anywhere in between - The most you'll pay is $11, trains typically run every hour, and you can walk from Castlemaine train station to a massive range of accomodation options, shops, pubs, cafes etc. Castlemaine Circus is walking distance from the train station and centre of town.
If you need to recover after training - Castlemaine Fitness has an indoor pool and sauna. Walk down any street in the centre of town and you'll find cafes, bakeries, restaurents, and pubs.
Is there a concession price?
We want to make this event as accessible as we can (whilst covering costs!). If money is tricky for you right now, - please reach out and we can talk about options - we can offer a few discounted places.
I'm keen but I've never done acro before - what should I do?
If you're excited about these types of workshops but don't yet have the skills to particiapte there are options to learn beginner skills in Castlemaine and Melbourne eg check out the adult classes at Castlemaine Circus or for Melbourne based folk - Women*s Circus (women and other marginalised genders) or Circus Nexus.
