Description

Getting Fluids Right – From Foundations to Critical Care

Fluid therapy is one of the most common — and most important — nursing interventions in feline practice. Getting it right can stabilise patients, prevent complications and significantly influence outcomes. This nurse-focused seminar is designed to strengthen your understanding of fluid therapy from first principles through to advanced, high-risk care.

At Cat Specialist Services, we work exclusively with feline patients and understand how nuanced fluid management can be. Cats are not small dogs. Their physiology, disease processes and tolerance to fluid shifts require thoughtful, informed nursing decisions. This session focuses on building that confidence and clarity.

This seminar features two practical, clinically focused presentations:

Basics of Fluid Therapy in Feline Patients – Shannan Healey

Breaking down the essentials of feline fluid therapy, this session links core physiology to practical nursing strategies that support safe, effective care for feline patients. You’ll revisit the fundamentals and strengthen your ability to apply them in everyday cases.

Advanced Fluid Therapy in Feline Patients – Natalie Hunt

An advanced look at feline fluid therapy, highlighting tailored fluid strategies and monitoring techniques for high-risk and critically ill patients. This session will support nurses working with complex cases where precision and close monitoring are critical.

Together, these sessions provide a comprehensive understanding of feline fluid therapy, from stable patients through to intensive care.

How This Seminar Will Improve Your Clinical Approach

Fluid therapy in cats requires careful calculation, ongoing assessment and proactive monitoring. Small errors in volume, rate or interpretation can have significant consequences, particularly in compromised or critically ill patients.

This seminar will help you confidently assess hydration status, choose appropriate fluid strategies and monitor patients effectively. By strengthening your understanding of both foundational and advanced techniques, you’ll improve patient safety, reduce complications and contribute to stronger clinical outcomes.

What You’ll Learn

• Core feline fluid physiology and distribution

• Assessing dehydration and fluid deficits accurately

• Choosing the right fluid type and rate

• Monitoring techniques to prevent over- or under-hydration

• Tailoring fluid plans for high-risk or critically ill patients

• Recognising early warning signs of complications

• Practical nursing considerations for safe fluid delivery
