Catastrophic Risk and the Public Good, Toward our Human Future
Event description
Climate change, pandemics, nuclear war, environmental collapse... There are many ways that humanity's future could go catastrophically wrong. Or, with careful planning and ambitious policy-making, it could instead go extraordinarily well.
But what would constitute a good future for humanity? When surveyed, what sort of future do individuals say they want? And, given the challenges we face as a nation and as a species, how do we achieve that future?
In this public webinar, we're joined by Dr Luke Kemp and Dr Millie Rooney to discuss these questions, with the session chaired by Dr Arnagretta Hunter of the Commission for the Human Future.
About the speakers:
- Dr Luke Kemp is a researcher at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge, and a former lecturer at our own Australian National University. His current research looks at both the past (civilization collapses) and the future (climate change and emerging technologies) to guide policy in the present.
(https://www.cser.ac.uk/team/luke-kemp/) - Dr Millie Rooney is the national coordinator of Australia reMADE, an organisation that has interviewed hundreds of Australians about their dreams for the future in order to develop a comprehensive vision of the future that Australians want to see. She also holds a PhD in Urban Studies and Cultural Geography, in which she studied Australian social norms related to generosity.
