Event description

Paddle out to say BYE(valve) and SHELL-abrate a successful oyster spatcatcher season with the Elizabeth River Project.

Join Elizabeth River Project staff for a paddle from the new Ryan Resilience Lab in Norfolk to plant baby oysters "or spat" along a restored shoreline. Participants will each receive a small basket of oyster spat before paddling to a previous oyster restoration site along Knitting Mill Creek. They will then lovingly place the spat on the reef to help keep this emerging oyster reef thriving. After wishing their spat a long and full-FILTERING life, they will enjoy a paddle along the Lafayette River and enjoy learning more about previous restoration projects that are already transforming the water quality and biodiversity of the Elizabeth River. Tandem kayaks, paddles, and life jackets will be provided.

What to Bring:

  • Comfortable clothing and shoes that can get wet (dress for the weather)
