Description

As part of World Water Week 2026, join Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the City of Stockholm, Swimmable Cities and partners to celebrate World Lake Day with a morning swim at Marieviksbadet.

World Lake Day is a United Nations observance that recognizes the vital role lakes play in supporting people, ecosystems, economies and climate resilience.

Held on the final day of World Water Week, the event brings together international water leaders, Stockholmers and visitors to celebrate healthy lakes, connect global water discussions with everyday life, and experience Stockholm's unique relationship with water. Swedish Olympic swimming medallist Therese Alshammar will join participants for the morning swim and celebration.

The ability to swim in Lake Mälaren is something many people take for granted. World Lake Day is an opportunity to celebrate what healthy lakes make possible while highlighting the importance of protecting freshwater ecosystems for future generations.

The event is open to both World Water Week participants and members of the public. Whether you choose to swim, take a quick dip or simply enjoy the morning by the water, everyone is welcome.
