Celebrating Matariki

Professor Matamua is Chief Advisor Matariki to the Government and Professor of Mātauranga Māori at Massey University. His groundbreaking research has reshaped national and international understandings of Māori astronomy, bridging mātauranga Māori and Western science. He is a gifted communicator, known for making complex ideas accessible and engaging across academic and public audiences.

Author of the bestselling Matariki: The Star of the Year and presenter of Living by the Stars, Rangi is helping to reconnect communities with maramataka (the Māori lunar calendar), the environment, and Indigenous knowledge systems. His work is part of a wider movement of decolonisation and cultural reclamation. In this public event, Rangi will be exploring the alignment of Matariki and Hauora.
