Academic Women in Science (AWiS) are pleased to invite you to celebrate the achievements of all UTS Science women working in STEM on Ada Lovelace Day 2023. All are welcome to attend but registration is required as numbers are limited.
Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology engineering and maths which aims to increase the profile of women in STEM and create new role models for both girls and women studying or working in STEM.
About Ada Lovelace:
Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace — known now simply as Ada Lovelace — was the first person to publish, in 1843, what we would now call a computer program. Lovelace’s program described how Bernoulli numbers might be calculated on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, a mechanical computer which he designed but never built. Lovelace also realised that the Analytical Engine could do more than just calculate numbers. It was also capable, she reasoned, of creating music and art, given the right data and algorithms. Academic Women in Science (AWiS) has organised an indie event in the ResHub 1-2 pm Tuesday Oct 10th, 2023, to celebrate this day! All welcome.
RES Hub is located at UTS Central on Level 5 in Building 2 (CB02.05.250), adjacent to the UTS Reading Room.
Program of events:
- Introduction by Prof. Philip Gale (Deputy Dean of Science).
- Panel discussion: Listen to four UTS Science women in STEM who will talk (5 mins each) about their work and who have inspired them. MC: A/Prof. Lana Mc Clements (SoLS). Panel members: Dr Laura Bradfield (SoLS), Dr Yan Liao (AIMI), Dr Jen Mathews (C3), A/Prof. Yuen Yee Cheng (MaPS).
- Following panel discussion, there will be a short fun trivia game designed to grow your knowledge of prominent female scientists of past and present, and more importantly, bring a smile to your face!
- Enjoy networking with UTS Science women in STEM.
- Enjoy a fabulous light lunch and refreshments.
