Uplifting, inspiring, enriching. Music at its best!
Cello Dreaming Old Witta School Maleny
Description
Six intimate gatherings. Eight original works. One new musical journey.
40 years playing other people’s music. Now it’s time to make my own.
I’m still pinching myself! My first-ever fundraiser for my own solo creative project raised $6,060 from 37 generous supporters on AUS ART DAY recently. Thank you to everyone who donated and supported me to take this creative leap. Your support means the world.
Now it’s time to get the music out of my head and into the world!
This November, following a week of focused creative development in my own studio, I’m planning my first mini-tour of Cello Dreaming before I record my debut solo album of eight original Australian works for cello and looping, inspired by the places and soundscapes of the Sunshine Coast, on Kabi Kabi Country.
I’d love you to join me for one of these intimate listening parties to experience the music while it’s still fresh, evolving and finding its shape ahead of professional recording in February 2027.
This is an invitation into my creative process, a chance to listen closely, discover how I build layers of sound, ask questions and share in the excitement of making something new.
I’m bringing this music to a string of gorgeous venues and inspiring spaces across the Sunshine Coast and hinterland. Come along, bring your curiosity and be part of it!
Thank you for helping me take this leap. I can’t wait to share the music with you.

About Louise King

Louise King
I’m an English award-winning, internationally trained, Australian based cellist, Teaching Artist, Festival Director and creative event producer. I’ve spent more than 30 years as a professional musician, performing, recording, teaching and collaborating across classical, contemporary, experimental and cross-cultural musical worlds. Before moving to Australia in 2003, I worked with orchestras and ensembles including the BBC Philharmonic, Hallé Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Northern Sinfonia, Opera North and Hong Kong Philharmonic, touring throughout the UK, Europe and Asia. Since settling on the Sunshine Coast in 2003, I’ve built a creative life that brings together performance, music education, festivals and regional community engagement. I’m the founder and artistic director of Cello Dreaming and Long Listen Festival, and my recording career spans over 20 albums, including releases with ABC Classics, Corella and NAXOS labels. After four decades playing and interpreting other people’s music, I’m now giving myself the time and space to explore my own voice as a composer/cellist. It feels exciting, a little daunting and very much the right time. I’d love you to be part of it! Louise xo
About My Music
My music is where improvisation meets contemporary art music, with my cello becoming an ambient sonic toolbox.
Using looping, delays, distortion, extended playing techniques and environmental sounds, I build layered soundscapes that move between gentle, meditative passages, hypnotic grooves, rhythmic intensity and soaring layered melodies.
I explore the full expressive range of the cello, from its lowest to highest notes, and from the end-pin to the peg box, using percussive sounds, spontaneous improvisation to create music that is atmospheric, cinematic and sometimes unexpected (even for me!).
The works respond to landscape, place, spiritual imagery and the dreamworld. They draw on my classical training while crossing stylistic boundaries into contemporary music, ambient electronics and experimental improvisation.
Cello Dreaming is my opportunity to bring these ideas together into eight original works and record them in February 2027 as my debut solo album.

FAQs
- Do I need to book?
Yes. Booking is essential, and places are limited. Booking early supports independent venues and artists to make new work and take brave steps to bring new ideas to your ears.
- What is a listening party?
It’s an intimate live music experience where I share original works in progress, talk about how they’re developing and invite you into the creative process. You’ll hear the music as it takes shape, rather than as a finished album. I am planning an album release tour mid 2027 and with your support, I can test this new work and grow my audience for this project.
- Do I need to know anything about classical ambient crossover music?
Not at all! Everyone is welcome. Just bring your curiosity and an open pair of ears.
- What time should I arrive?
Please check the details for your chosen event. Doors generally open 30 minutes before the music begins. This is a grass roots and people powered project and I am very grateful to my donors, supporters and volunteers.
- What should I bring?
This varies by venue. Some gatherings invite you to bring shared food and BYO drinks; outdoor events may require a chair or rug and picnic supplies. Please check your chosen event listing.
- What happens if the weather is bad?
Outdoor events are weather permitting. Please check the event listing for confirmation and updates. Booked patrons receive an auto event reminder with updates 24 hours before the event.
