Ceramics Intro To The Wheel with Elaine Richter

Learn the basics of ceramic wheel-throwing, how to work safely and independently in a communal studio, and gain the requisite skills to become an Ignite Ceramics member, in this workshop facilitated by experienced ceramicist and educator Elaine Richter.

This two-day course will cover a studio orientation, personal safety, wheel operation, clay and water management, working with common studio tools and equipment, cleaning and safety protocols, emergency procedures, wedging and preparing clay, and basic wheel work including centering and throwing basic cylinders.

By the end of the weekend participants will be equipped with the skills they need to work safely in a ceramics studio and commence their journey with wheel throwing. Course participants will be eligible for Ignite Ceramics studio membership upon completion.

Only six places are available and early booking is advised.

Course fees include all tools and materials, and a bisque firing of selected works. Following the workshop an optional glazing session will be offered for an additional fee.

Artist Bio

A ceramic artist, teacher, curator and gallery director, Elaine Richter gained her Diploma in Studio Ceramics from Perth Technical College. Relocating to the Byron Hinterland in 2022, Richter serves as director and artist-in-residence at Nashua’s Byron-Hinterland Pottery. Richter’s work includes stoneware domestic pottery pieces and decorative Raku works, and she has completed commissions for many corporate and private clients. Richter especially loves the power and emotion of the Raku firing technique and the unexpected results of the process.
