Chair Caning with Steve Emma
Event description
Expert chair caner, Steve Emma, will demonstrate the skills needed to repair a woven caned chair seat, using a damaged piece of Blithewold’s collection. Bring your chair in need of care to this series and learn the tips and tricks to complete the process. Steve will provide the caning materials and pegs required for the transformation.
Steve has been caning chairs for over 40 years and specializes in a variety of patterns and materials. He has instructed at numerous museums, libraries, and Community Schools and is a member of the Wood Workers Guild of RI. Steve recently received the RISCA grant to train an apprentice in preserving this craft for future generations.
Please bring a chair in good condition, with fewer than 130 holes drilled all the way through, an old large towel, a bucket to soak the cane, scissors or snips, an ice pick (not an awl), and a few snap clothespins.
Don’t forget to bring your patience and a sense of humor!
Not suitable for children under 16.
Caning materials are included.
Preregistration is required. Each class is limited to 8 people.
