Champeta AfroFest 2026
Description
Champeta Afrofest Melbourne 2026
As part of Cartagena de Indias Independence Day celebrations (November 11), Melbourne will host the Champeta Afrofest 2026 — the first Afro-Colombian cultural festival in Australia.
On Saturday, November 7, from 11:00 a.m., St Kilda Town Hall will come alive with the vibrant sounds, colors and flavors of the Colombian Caribbean. Champeta Afrofest is more than a music festival; it is an intercultural encounter that celebrates Afro-Colombian heritage and brings Champeta and other Afro-Caribbean expressions to one of the world's most multicultural cities as languages of dialogue, resistance and joy.
The program features live music and DJs, dance performances and open Champeta classes, academic talks on the African diaspora, traditional Caribbean cuisine, and a creative market showcasing Afro-Colombian entrepreneurs.
This landmark event is made possible with the support of Colombia’s Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge, through its Diaspora Cultural Projects Grant, strengthening cultural circulation and creative economies abroad. From Cartagena to Melbourne, a celebration of roots, rhythm and community.
