Event description

Join us in Wagga Wagga in the New South Wales Riverina Region for face-to-face prevention training. We're running three full-day workshops, with options for any level of experience in the prevention of violence against women.

On day one, those new to the framework can learn the foundations, with an introduction to Change the story. Days two and three provide an opportunity to deepen and extend on your efforts at putting prevention into action and to reflect on the foundational elements of good primary prevention. Those new to the material can attend just the first day or all three days. Those who are already familiar with the material may wish to attend only the second and third days.

Catering will be provided as part of this training.

PREREQUISITES
Learners wishing to undertake Deepening the change will need to have either completed the introductory full day workshop, Change starts with us or have an intermediate-level knowledge of Change the story: A shared framework for preventing violence against women in Australia.

Learners wishing to undertake day two of Deepening the change, 'Design', will be required to have undertaken day one, 'Principles'.

Day 1.
Change starts with us: A fully-day primary prevention workshop

9:30am-4:30pm AEDT, Wednesday 26 November

This training aims to support people who are new to the work of primary prevention of violence against women. It provides the introductory skills and knowledge to implement Change the story: A shared framework for preventing violence against women in Australia.

This training covers:

  • the link between violence against women and gender inequality,

  • key components of the Change the story framework, including the drivers of violence against women, gendered norms, practices and structures and elements of an intersectional approach,

  • the essential ingredients for prevention practice (prevention techniques, socioecological model and essential actions),

  • the five guiding principles for addressing masculinities and working with men and boys in prevention, and

  • other evidence-based frameworks and resources to support primary prevention practice.

This training is for people who are newer to prevention work, or who are looking to understand the national evidence base.

Days 2 and 3.
Deepening the change: Primary prevention in practice

9:30am-4:30pm AEDT, Thursday 27 November (Principles)
9:30am-4:30pm AEDT, Friday 28 November (Design)

This two-day workshop has been designed to support practitioners who are actively engaged in primary prevention work. Primary prevention is a long term, transformative change process. This workshop covers prevention topics that can be tricky to navigate, offering tips and techniques for practice. Participants will leave with a range of tools, practical frameworks and more confidence to deepen their preventative change work.

The first day of this workshop, Principles, covers the elements of practice that prevention practitioners most often address in the course of their work:

  • Gender transformative change,

  • Intersectionality in practice (with links to the Changing the picture and Changing the landscape frameworks),

  • Working in partnership,

  • Working with resistance and backlash,

  • Addressing masculinities and working with men and boys, and

  • Practitioner care.

The second day of this workshop, Design, provides learners with an opportunity to design a prevention initiative that addresses a complex scenario related to gender-based violence. This covers:

  • Audiences and big reach settings,

  • Essential prevention actions from Change the story,

  • Primary prevention techniques,

  • Communications and values-based messaging, and

  • How to apply a theory of change to measure impact and reach.

We have a minimum 72-hour cancellation period. This training is free, and your place will be made available to another person on the waitlist.
