Join craftivist Tal Fitzpatrick as she shares her practice as part of 'Changemakers'.
Hear from Tal as she talks about her works in the exhibition and approach to making. Then try your hand at craftivism in an artist-led banner making workshop and create your own vision for change.

About the artist
Tal Fitzpatrick is an Australian artist, craftivist and researcher. Her textile-based practise is influenced by the work of her paternal grandmother, Australian artist Dawn Fitzpatrick.
Tal Fitzpatrick is best known for her work in the field of craftivism and has co-led a number of global craftivism projects tacking social, political and environmental issues including the @Covid19quilt (2020), the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Quilt Project (2016-2018) and the PM Please Quilt Project (2017).
Fitzpatrick’s textile-based practise combines the physical techniques of applique, quilting and embroidery with the practice of socially-engaged art making and digital tools including social media.
She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA).

About the exhibition
'Changemakers' is a travelling exhibition and workshop that invites you to try your hand at craftivism. Craftivists celebrate and subvert cliched notions of needlecraft and other "women’s work" to bring attention to a range of social justice issues.
'Changemakers' features eight textile banners created by craftivist Tal Fitzpatrick. Her designs draw upon visual protest traditions such as women’s suffrage campaign banners. Like their forerunners, Tal’s banners make visible the challenges women face, including violence and inequality.
At the Cascades Female Factory, we invite you to reflect on the experiences of women in the past and the challenges women continue to face today.
Come join us to share ideas, build community and create a banner about your own vision for change.

- Where can I park?
Street parking is available on both Degraves Street and Syme Street. The Cascades Female Factory can be entered from either Degraves Street or Syme Street.
- What do I do when I arrive?
Please check in with staff at the Visitor Desk. Your name will be checked off a list of registrations for the program.
- Can I explore the historic site while I'm there for the program?
Yes - registered participants will be able to access the historic site free of charge. We also have our Convict Women's Tour available at 11am or 2pm that participants can join for $10.00, payable on the day.

The program is presented in conjunction with 'Changemakers' on display at the Cascades Female Factory Historic Site from 9 September to 15 November 2026.
