Changemakers: Considering Residencies
Event description
Residencies offer time, space and a new environment to develop a new project, finalise a work in progress or even all-important time for reflection. They also present an opportunity to access a different space, mindset, set of skills and people. All valuable tools for creatives to develop and further their practice.
While the isolated studio in which to focus on creative output is the most common presentation, residencies can and do take many forms, and in this Changemakers event, we’ll explore the diverse offerings in the residency world and the benefits they present. The conversation will be led by outgoing Executive Director of Res Artis, Eliza Dawson who has led this important worldwide network of 700 arts residencies across 80 countries for the past 8 years and managed Asialink's Arts Residency Program. Alongside Eliza, we’ll hear from Amaara Raheem, Sri Lankan Australian dance-artist based between Naarm/Melbourne and Gariwerd/Grampians. Amaara's practice of choreography and performance is deeply informed by multiple belongings. Amaara will share her creative research on experimental documentation and 'residency practices'.
In the second half of the event, we’ll explore options for a residency based in the region’s newest library, Biyal-a Armstrong Creek (Wadawurrung Country). You’ll have the opportunity to contribute your ideas and help co-design a proposal for this new residency – one that has the potential to host multiple art forms and offer new explorations for engaging in the public space.
To help reduce the financial impact upon creatives wishing to attend this event, 5 x $100 travel stipends will be available for allocation to those undertaking a round trip of 2.5 hours. Please apply as part of your registration and allocation will be made via random selection 48 hours prior to the event.
