Changing the Climate: Diverse Leadership for a Just Transition
Event description
Join Careers in Colour (CiC) and the Multicultural Leadership Initiative (MLI) for a conversation on why cultural, racial, and linguistic diversity is vital to climate action, and how we can create space for it.
This event is open to everyone: those pursuing careers in climate and sustainability, and those simply seeking to be more climate-conscious in their own work. As the urgency of the climate crisis grows, so too does the need for the people shaping our future to reflect the diversity of the communities most impacted.
We’ll explore:
Why racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity matters in the climate ecosystem, and why climate action cannot be the responsibility of one group alone.
The barriers and challenges multicultural professionals face in entering and advancing in the field.
What an inclusive climate transition looks like, and the role we can all play in shaping it.
Moderated by Afeeya Akhand, Head of Research and Policy at Careers in Colour, we will be joined by some fantastic speakers and panellists on the night, including:
Alopi Latukefu, Director of the Global Centre for Social Justice and Advocacy Leadership
Caroline Wang, China Analyst at Climate Energy Finance
Maria "Aunty Polly" Cutmore, Gomeroi and Anaiwan Elder from Moree
Dr. Kim Loo, General Practitioner, Board Member for Doctors for the Environment Australia and Chair for Asian Australians for Climate Solutions
Dr. Yolanda Waters, Director of Research and Education at MLI
Danielle Haj-Moussa, Investment Manager at Main Sequence Ventures
Bob Sudharshan Ratnarajah, Purpose-led Genie, Author and Chief Enabling Officer at Purpose with Profit.

About Careers in Colour
Careers in Colour (CiC) emerged as a grassroots response to address the need for more racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity in Australia’s senior leadership. Our purpose is to support people of colour by running community initiatives that provide pathways to effect positive change in their careers, workplaces, and beyond - focusing on industries and sectors of strategic importance in Australia.
About Multicultural Leadership Initiative
Multicultural Leadership Initiative (MLI) is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organisation that identifies gaps and grows solutions to enable racially, culturally and linguistically diverse people to participate in building a climate safe future. Climate action is not the single domain or responsibility of one part of society. Building a climate safe future requires all of us to be involved. To this end, MLI works in a non-partisan way to support the acceleration and growth of emerging and current community, business and political leaders who wish to take on a more active leadership role in building climate solutions.
