Event description

Take a self-guided tour of the restored Bendigo Cemetery Chapel. Ask questions of heritage consultant about its history.

Constructed in the Gothic style in 1873 from Harcourt granite. It had been left unused for several decades and since the restoration work is now able to be used regularly.

The Bendigo Cemetery Chapel has reopened on 22 November 2024, with MP for Bendigo West Maree Edwards cutting the ribbon.

There have been requests from the community for use of the chapel at the Bendigo Cemetery for some time, for a number of purposes. These uses include a quiet reflective space out of the weather, a meeting space, conducting small funerals, weddings etc. and general small event space.

The restoration works included addressing ongoing salt attack in the interior rendered walls and exterior pointing mortar. Other repairs included work on timber doors and hinges and replicating missing decorative columns on the buttresses.

By rectifying a number of serious issues the building had in the past, the owners Remembrance Parks Central Victoria will now be able to keep the building in good condition into the future.

The Bendigo Cemetery Chapel is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR 1614).
