CHICC Expert Workshop: Usability Beyond the Checkbox

Far too often, usability is confused with UX design, marketing or a late-stage compliance checkbox – leading to costly design and engineering decisions being made before the product, end users or problem are clearly defined.

Back by popular demand, Sento Solutions – Australia’s only dedicated usability engineering and human factors specialist – returns to CHICC this July for a game-changing workshop to demystify usability in healthtech.

Usability Beyond the Checkbox is a practical workshop that will cut through the confusion of usability in medtech, digital and connected health solutions. Carla Zampagione and Pauline Gavelle will deep-dive into what usability really means and why it’s so crucial to understand and implement early on.

Throughout the session, we will explore when to begin usability work in the product development journey and the risks of engaging too late. You will learn how early implementation of usability strategies can help to refine the product, make sense of your end users and product interactions, and sharpen the problem definition before critical decisions are made. You’ll also experience first-hand how unclear user instructions, hidden assumptions and leading questions can lead to detrimental safety and adoption barriers for healthtech products.

Attendees will leave with an effective, compliant and immediately actionable usability approach that teams can apply directly to their products from day one, helping startups reduce risk, strengthen regulatory strategies and build healthtech solutions that are safer, clearer and easier for users to adopt.

Carla Zampaglione, Managing Director, Sento Solutions | Expert Usability Engineer | Croissant Connoisseur

Carla, a former mechanical engineer with international product development experience, founded Sento Solutions, a consultancy specialising in Usability Engineering (UE) and Human Factors (HF) for medical devices and digital healthcare products.

As the only company in Australia exclusively offering these services, Sento has become an industry leader, contributing to over 30 successful medical device and SaMD developments. Carla oversees client relationships, industry partnerships, accelerator collaborations, and mentoring programs. She excels in user research, usability study facilitation, and deep regulatory knowledge.

Carla also sits on Swinburne's Centre for Design & Innovation advisory committee and enjoys mentoring STEM students, teaching spin classes, and leveraging her qualifications as a French Pastry Chef.

Pauline Gavelle, Usability Engineer, Sento Solutions

Pauline is a Usability / Human Factors Engineer at Sento Solutions. With a background in Product Design, she has experience across a diverse range of device types and stages of product development.

Pauline works closely with start-up teams developing medical devices and digital healthcare solutions to help them understand users, identify use-related risks, and support the development of safe, usable, and effective products.
