Bookings are Essential
Bookings are essential so that we have contact details and know how many will be attending.
What We'll Do
We’ll start at 2.00 pm with a welcome and introduction. This workshop will be hosted at Wendy and Trevor Wieden's 10-acre rural property at Goombungee. Many members visited 9 months ago for a Garden Insights afternoon, so this will also be an opportunity to have a sneak peak at progress as their permaculture garden begins to take form.
Permaculture ethics call us to care for all living creatures. That's why we raise chickens with love and kindness, provide them with the highest quality of life, and when the time comes, process them respectfully and humanely using the whole bird with deep gratitude.
The afternoon will focus on a:
Chicken Processing Workshop
presented by Doreen Jachmann, Nourished Landscapes.
In this practical workshop, Doreen will show us how to humanly process our own meat chickens, step by step.
She'll also tell us about different poultry breed options that we might consider keeping for meat (ducks, turkeys, geese, and dual-purpose chicken breeds) and how to choose what's best for your homestead or backyard.
We'll learn about:
Health assessment of the chickens
Set up and preparation
Each stage of the process from dispatch to freezer.
You are welcome to practice on the day or just watch. There won't be any pressure, just practical learning in a supportive environment.
Please bring a chair that you can move around the farm as needed.
If you are keen to attend, please book soon as we'll need to restrict total numbers of attendees for safety reasons and to give everyone the best learning experience.
About Doreen Jachmann
Doreen is an experienced and qualified gardener who is passionate about sustainable living and the benefits of growing your own food.
Doreen grew up in a small village south of Berlin in former communist East Germany. It was common practice that people would have a food garden and raise animals for milk, eggs and meat. From an early age she started to grow fruit and vegetables and take up a quarter of her parents 1000sqm property and created an ecologically well-functioning food garden that had many medicinal flowers integrated with the food producing crops. During her early teenage years, she volunteered at the locally renowned Saxdorfer Pfarrgarten, where she furthered her study on plants and garden techniques.
Doreen has gained formal education in Environmental Monitoring of Soil and Water and achieved a Bachelor in Horticulture as well as completed a Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment and has completed various other courses. Doreen is dedicated to sharing her knowledge and expertise to help others create nourished landscapes.
