Event description

Farmer Nat's Chicken Workshop is a practical short course on the essentials of keeping and caring for chickens at home. With a background in animal welfare and over 7 years of experience caring for poultry and larger livestock, Nat is ready to share her expertise developed in collaboration with veterinarians and industry professionals. Whether you're after a refresher or keen to learn more before you're ready to take on chickens of your own, Nat and the Animal Husbandry team are able to help with all things chickens to ensure your hens thrive.

You'll learn about:

  • appropriate feed requirements for all ages of laying poultry, from chick to pullet to adult
  • conducting a health check
  • fundamental chicken care techniques
  • safe handling and catching
  • poultry enrichment set up
  • backyard housing requirements
  • nest box set up and egg collection
  • safe egg handling practices.

Attendees must be a minimum of 14 years old, and children under 18 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (at no extra cost).

This event will be hosted in the Lambing Shed at Collingwood Children's Farm with light refreshments. Please note any dietaries in your booking.

Chickens provide more than just fresh eggs, they're companions, and we can't wait to introduce you to the joys of working with poultry! And if you like what you've learned, we have chickens available to purchase on a sliding scale, starting at as little as $15 each. Learn more here.
