Essential learning for anyone working with infants, children and whānau - join us in Alexandra for The Foundations of Child Protection.
A 3-and-a-half-hour workshop facilitated by local experienced and friendly professionals. Designed and tailored with you in mind, to empower and support you to be more informed with awareness, understanding and action. You will walk away with the safeguarding and child protection skills essential for any work or role with tamariki and whānau in our community.

Time: 9:30am - 1:00pm (prompt start, please be on time)
Parking on site is limited so be sure to come early enough to find street parking. There are a couple of disability parks near the venue.
You are welcome to bring your own snacks, as we will only be having a short break halfway through the workshop.
After registering you'll receive a questionnaire about your knowledge and experience of child protection, we ask that all attendees fill this out ahead of the workshop, this allows us to tailor each workshop to the participants ensuring you get the most out of your time.

- What is Child Protection?
Child Protection is the collection of policies, procedures and laws we use to safeguard our tamariki/children from harm including violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect. Communities that have a culture of child protection have safer kids and safer whānau.
- Who should attend?
Anyone working with children of any age or whānau! This includes volunteers, coaches, community leaders.
We have previously delivered to - whole GP practices including admin staff, early childhood teachers, sports coaches, pastoral care workers, HR professionals, youth group leaders, caregivers and volunteers working with tamariki, new mums and community groups.

When you register to attend a workshop, we'll then send you a questionnaire - these questions then allow us to refine and tailor the workshop to the group, ensuring we spend enough time on what the group wants and less time on what the group is already confident in.

Defining child abuse and neglect.
Risk factors and protective factors.
Responding to disclosure and concerns.
Recording and reporting disclosure and concerns.
Barriers to reporting and how to overcome the discomfort.

Throughout there will be a combination of discussion, seminar style teaching, group activities and real scenarios to work through pulling all the learning together.
- Is there a more advanced workshop after this one?
Our goal with the Foundations of Child Protection is to get more of our community at a baseline level of awareness, understanding and having the confidence to act when needed.
For those who are needing more in-depth and robust training, after completing the Foundations of Child Protection, we will be offering another workshop soon which will meet that need. This would be ideal for educators, teachers and those in medical, health, social and whānau care settings.
