Event description

Death, loss and grief are part of the human experience. But how do we talk about this sensitive topic with children and young people? And how can we best support them, when they face the loss of a pet, a family member, a classmate or friend?

In this event you will learn about:

  • grief processes for children & young people - what to expect
  • how to talk about death, grief and loss (e.g. within your family, in the classroom...)
  • how to support children & young people when they are experiencing grief

Matt Cameron from Timaru will facilitate this workshop, where there will be a presentation as well as some small group activities. Matt was a teacher for 26 years, teaching across all levels at primary and secondary schools. In 2009 he completed counselling training and since 2012 has specialised in grief and loss work, working part time as the Oceans Grief and Loss Coordinator for South Canterbury and now full time for Skylight as part of their Awhi Mai Awhi Atu counselling in schools team. He is an experienced workshop facilitator, having facilitated workshops online, around NZ and internationally.

This event is for adults only and is aimed at parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, teacher aides and all those who work with children and young people. Open to any interested adult, but please register/ get your free tickets so we know how many to expect.

Organised by Keep Learning Mid Canterbury and Hospice Mid Canterbury with the support of Skylight, the event is free but you have the option to give a koha to support the cost of running it. All koha gratefully received, thank you.
