Description

Article 30: Children have the right to use their own language, celebrate their culture and practise their religion.

Join us in Ballajura for the official celebration of Children’s Week, convened in Western Australia by Meerilinga!

We'll be highlighting the rights of children to use their language, culture and religion (as proclaimed by the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)) with the help of our community friends, including Together Now WA, Yalkarang Consulting, Multicultural Futures and Akwaaba African Drumming. Each stall holder will be hosting a children's activity and have information about the services that they provide throughout Perth.

There'll be lots of free entertainment and activities at this twilight event. Some of our favourites include:

This event has been made possible thanks to the support of Lotterywest, the Department of Education and Ballajura Primary School.

FAQs

  • What age group is this event for?

All are welcome! We've made sure that there are activities for children of all ages, including young children (aged 0-8 years). The older kids will be sure to have fun too with our friends from Dodgy Bros and Akwaaba Drumming while there's lots of local groups for families to say hi to, including Meerilinga Parenting Services.

  • Do I need to register to attend this free event?

Registering assists in the running of the event but it is not essential to register in order to attend.

  • What is Children's Week?

Children’s Week is a week dedicated to celebrating children, promoting the Rights of the Child as proclaimed by the United Nations in 1954 and to remind us of our responsibility to advocate for children as citizens and their right to a positive childhood.

Meerilinga has been the proud convener of Children’s Week in Western Australia since 1985, the first year it was celebrated in Australia. We have been delighted to contribute to the increased understanding and recognition of the Rights of the Child.

  • Who is Meerilinga?

As well as convening Children's Week in Western Australia, Meerilinga provides early childhood education, family and community services and formal training for Early Childhood Educators. We've been doing this work for 115 years, since our establishment as the Kindergarten Union of Western Australia, and are now a registered charity with a focus on "promoting positive childhood".
